Abstract
Female athletes in professional football may be more exposed to burnout risk factors, considering the challenges of team sports and the adversities of being a woman in a traditionally male-dominated sport. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of female athletes in a team sport regarding burnout, including risk factors and coping strategies. Twelve professional athletes from a club in Rio de Janeiro, aged between 18 and 28 years (M = 23.33, SD = 3.27), were interviewed. The responses were analyzed using content analysis with the support of IRaMuTeQ software. The analyses revealed a strong presence of collectivity, highlighting both the strengths of teamwork and the difficulties that emerge within the group. Other identified risk factors included excessive training, low performance, self-criticism, and hopelessness in the face of unsatisfactory situations. Some individual strategies for managing stress were also reported. It was also found that addressing burnout requires action not only from the athletes, but also from the club’s management and technical staff. The study contributes to the literature by offering a situated analysis of how gender inequalities, group dynamics, and personal resources influence the experience of burnout in women’s football.
