Abstract

Introduction: Bone marrow donation is relevant due to the possibility of saving the lives of patients with cancer and hematological diseases

Introduction: Bone marrow donation is important because it can save the lives of patients with cancer and hematological diseases. There is a high rate of patients looking for a compatible donor and a significant number of refusals. According to the literature, religion is listed as one of the main reasons for refusing to donate organs/tissues, while altruism is frequently cited as a reason for praising donation. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between religion and altruism in bone marrow donors registered in Brazil. Method: Cross-sectional study with group comparisons within a predominantly quantitative approach. Data from 93 women aged between 20 and 60 years were analyzed; they answered three instruments. Results: The main finding indicated higher levels of altruism among registered donors who practice Christian religions than among those who self-declared as non-religious. Discussion and Conclusion: We understand that further studies are needed to identify which aspects of religious practice are associated with altruism and to investigate how this relationship can be leveraged to reduce the refusal rate and encourage altruism in the context of bone marrow donation.

There is a high rate of patients looking for a compatible donor and a significant number of refusals. According to the literature, religion is listed as one of the main reasons for refusing to donate organs/tissues, while altruism is frequently referred for praising donation. The objective of the study was to investigate the main factors that influence the decision about registration and bone marrow donation in people already registered and their relationship with religious aspects and altruism. Method: Data from 93 women aged between 20 and 60 years were analyzed, and three instruments were used for the research. Result: The main finding indicated a higher level of altruism in registered donors who practice Christian religions compared to those who self-declared to have no religion. Discussion and Conclusion: It is understood that more studies are needed to understand which aspects of religious practice are associated with altruism and how this relationship can be investigated to reduce the refusal rate and encourage altruism in the context of bone marrow donation.
